At the SJI International High School Open House on 9th May, a group of alumni generously spent their Saturday morning welcoming the next generation of Lasallian students. Returning to campus felt like a beautiful step back in time, offering graduates the perfect opportunity to pay it forward, reconnect with old friends, and marvel at how the school has evolved.
Spotting the Changes: In Alumni’s Own Words
We asked our returning alumni about the very first things that caught their eye when they stepped back onto the campus. Here is what they felt had changed the most:
The Canteen Revamp
"I think the biggest change was how much bigger the canteen had become.I also remember that it previously had much more outdoor space."
— Michael Ng ’17
The Updated Layout
"One biggest change I noticed on campus was probably the updated canteen section, and the grass patch leading into it."
— Louisa Kang ’25
New Dedicated Space for Students
“The Student Hub sitting on Level 1 near the canteen... Where was that when I was in school?!”
— Dominic Chan ’23
Alumni Guide the Next Generation
For many alumni, volunteering is about paying it forward. Ayahi Tanaka ‘25 vividly remembered attending an SJI International Open Day years ago, the very event that began her own journey with the school, which inspired her to return and help the next generation. Throughout the morning, the graduates acted as a vital bridge for prospective families.
Louisa recounted how she was able to use her own recent memories to comfort hesitant teenagers who were too shy to ask questions of the staff. "I wanted to offer an objective, holistic perspective on the SJI International experience," she explained. For parents, Dominic was one of the volunteers at the open house who became a reassuring voice regarding the leap from local systems to the IB curriculum, pointing to the school's excellent peer support networks and academic mentorship.
The Alumni Community’s Timeless Connection
While the alumni came to serve the school, they walked away with a profound sense of community. A universal highlight of the day was the organic networking and bonding that took place after the crowds cleared.
Alumni spanning nearly a decade of graduating years found themselves swapping stories, discussing their current university paths, and bonding instantly. As Ayahi beautifully put it:
"We were able to connect quickly over our shared trust in each other as fellow graduates from SJI International and the Lasallian community."
Thank you to all our wonderful alumni volunteers who brought their warmth, and enduring Lasallian spirit back to campus. You are our pride and reflection of what makes SJI International so special!
