We began the new academic year by welcoming six notable alumni to campus in January: Hilda Foo ('09), Savita Kumar ('18), Minh Trinh ('09), Amanda Ang ('10), Ruru Hoong ('14), and Ethan Murugasu ('18).
Alumni participate in Service Learning Week
This year's Service Learning Week was enriched by the return of alumnae Hilda Foo and Savita Kumar, who generously shared their post-graduation journeys in service. Hilda, whose volunteer work at the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped and Canossian School laid the foundation for her ongoing commitment to community, offered a compelling narrative of making a tangible difference. Savita, a Social Work Associate, provided invaluable insights into her impactful work supporting youth mental health. These alumni visits are integral to our commitment to bridging the gap between current students and our esteemed alumni network. By engaging with individuals who have successfully translated their SJI International education into meaningful careers and service-oriented lives, our students gain invaluable perspectives, receive practical guidance, and witness firsthand the enduring relevance of our educational ethos.
U.S.-Based Economics Alumni Return for Campus Visit
During January, a cohort of alumni residing in the United States, comprising esteemed academics and professionals, revisited the campus to foster connections with current economics students and faculty. Among the returning alumni were Dr. Minh Trinh ('09), Assistant Professor of Political Science at Purdue University; Amanda Ang ('10), Economics PhD candidate at the University of Southern California; Ruru Hoong ('14), Business Economics PhD candidate at Harvard Business School; and Ethan Murugasu ('18). For many, this marked their first return to campus since graduation, an initiative spurred by a recent alumni gathering in the U.S. John Ooi ('09), presently an Economics Teacher at SJI International, provided a campus tour, and the alumni participated in classroom observations, student interactions, and meetings with High School Principal Bradley Bird and faculty member Renato Rainone.
Why Alumni Visits Make an Impact?
Alumni visits provide students with a real-world perspective, showcasing the diverse possibilities that await them. By sharing their challenges and triumphs, our alumni inspire students to embrace ambition, cultivate resilience, and pursue their passions. They serve as living proof that the skills and values instilled at SJI International are foundational to success in any field. This direct engagement fosters a sense of belonging and empowers students to envision their own successful futures, contributing to a vibrant and interconnected alumni network.
